If you are somebody in your forties or fifties, and you have fond memories of your first car, more than likely you drove an All-American muscle car. There is a growing movement of people throughout the United States shopping for classic muscle cars to restore. The big reason is that not any of the Big Three are making these awesome machines anymore. The big question is when is anyone going to make a real muscle car again?
Chevy and Ford happen to be launching new versions of Camaro’s and Mustangs ever since the 60′s. The drawback is really that these cars at this point are unlike the powerful muscle cars they once were. When is anyone going to manufacture a muscle car with a 327 and a 4 barrel carburetor for a second time. The unfortunate truth is we almost certainly are not going to have one ever again. The actual issue is that people want to constantly upgrade things just for the sake of it. For instance the 1967 Camaro which happens to be one of the most popular muscle cars ever created. Though it received many honors and was highly sought after, Chevy stopped producing it. The same goes for the 1966 Mustang, which is another classic that Ford just decided wasn’t worth making.
I’ll tell you the ironic aspect. Volkswagen became aware of the opportunity to reintroduce the VW Bug and they did. This new Beetle sold very well in spite of its ultra modern design. Had they stuck to the original style, they may have sold more. But these people can’t see past the end of their noses and they keep believing that newer is better.
One of the most important point might be this. What will you do if Chevy revealed that they were producing a new Camaro with a 327 engine and a 4 barrel carburetor with no modern technology? I’ve actually asked hundreds of people through the years and they all say that they would go out an get one. So what is the problem with the car people? It seems like we have a demand for these classic cars but it doesn’t seem like the car companies are listening.
What will it take for GM or Ford to make a decision to make all those classic muscle cars once again? I can nearly guarantee that people are going to be queueing up to get these new American classics. We could get lucky and some day these companies will choose to start making them. Sadly the head people at these companies have this belief, that if they think they are creating new and better muscle car, people will want it. In my opinion I think it’s about time to go back to the essentials.
